Rolfing, founded by Ida Rolf, is a therapy that addresses the body’s structural integration by manually manipulating the connective tissue (fascia) and educating the client about movement. Rolfing is a process of restoring fascia organization, an exploration of contributing conditions that challenges your ideal posture, and movement education to maintain structural integration. Ida Rolf states, “Form and function are a unity, two sides of one coin. In order to enhance function, appropriate form must exist or be created.” A Rolfer is trained to conduct sessions from a strong understanding of anatomy, kinesiology and physiology. Also, the Rolfer is trained to administer sessions with a sound relationship of intuition. Intuition is impairative to distinquish between the physical, organic body and the energy feilds of the body. The approach to Rolfing is to assess the physical body with consideration to the individuals spiritual being. Some variables that can affect our posture, ultimately distortion of fascia, can be physical and/or emotional trauma. It is important we prevent our bodies from becoming victims to poor posture.

Our bodies are brilliant compensating machines that can endure years of inefficient organization before it will give signals of disharmony. When connective tissue is altered from its normal length it pulls joints out of their ideal articulation impacting overall alignment of the skeleton. When our bodies begin to be pulled from their natural state of balance then gravity exaggerates the condition. When the skeletal body is disorganized it not only affects movement but can also impinge the nervous system and the internal organs. It is important to strive for optimal posture to prevent unnecessary stress on our body so the body can conserve energy for living a vibrant, healthy life. The technique of Rolfing involves a combination of slow, applied pressure and gentle movements. This brings circulation to the area resulting in more pliable connective tissue for reconstructing. Various strokes are used depending on the deformity of the tissue, too short or overstretched. Optimal structural integration is best achieved by the accumulative progress sessions. Individuals may opt for the classic Rolfing 10 series or request customized mini series.
